While I may or may not be known for my “obnoxious” playlist (that’s literally what its called) full of trashy pop and r&b gems, the genre that feels most like home to me is rock. Despite the sideways glances I usually get from other attendees at the shows I go to (Tool always gets some good questionable faces), there’s usually nowhere I’d rather be than in the middle of a general admission crowd watching other passionate fans beat the living daylights out of each other in a pit.
Whether you’re letting out some angst or just in the mood, these 5 songs are sure to rock your face off.
CAFO, Animals As Leaders
While it’s entirely possible that the SICK drum track on this ridiculous song is programmed on the record,
I can tell you from experience that fill-in drummer Matt Garstka can play every bit of that track live.
Marianas Trench, August Burns Red
This Killswitch-esque intro is one of my favorite rock intros at the moment. The song spends 4 minutes
and 18 seconds becoming increasingly epic, right up until the full-on metal fade-out finish.
This post-harcore powerhouse is almost more tame than I’m used to from these guys – but the words
“take a chance don’t let it weigh you down / you gotta get out of here” certainly speak to me
after sitting at work in my cubicle for 9 hours.
I Miss The Misery, Halestorm
Okay, so this may be encroaching on pop-rock in comparison with the others on this list, but there’s
no question that frontwoman Elizabeth “Lzzy” Hale (yeah I thought there’d be a vowel in there too)
completely crushes the vocals.
Feed the Machine, Red
With another of my favorite intros, this song represents so many of the things I love about this genre. If I were
a dude, I’d want to be able to let loose a scream like Michael Barnes. Hell if I could do it now I probably would.
